Personal Finance, Week 9: Getting in Shape for Less: How to Save Money on Athletics and Exercise

What are the least expensive (and most expensive) ways to get in shape? One of the least expensive ways to get into shape that I know of is going for a walk or a run every day. Some other ways to get into shape are doing push-ups, pull-ups, squats, and/or sit-ups. These are really easy ways to get into shape because you don’t need any equipment for any of these exercises except a pull-up bar, but you don’t have to have a pull-up bar you can use a tree branch or something else. Some of the most expensive ways to get into shape are to hire a personal trainer or buy expensive gym equipment, like treadmills or exercise bikes.

Gym memberships: are they worth it? When I was younger my mom had a membership at a gym and the gym had a nursery so she would take me and my three brothers and put us in the nursery while she worked out. My mom waited to get a membership till the cost to get a membership was very close to $0 and the monthly cost was just $20-$25. So gym memberships are worth it, if you wait for the right time to sign up. Some gym memberships are not worth it. Like when my brothers and I got too old to be in the nursery at the gym and the gym moved to a different location that was farther away my mom couldn’t go to the gym as often, so she was just paying $20 a month and only going a few times a month. So it just depends on your schedule whether gym memberships are worth it or not.

Consider equipment, cost of lessons/training, risk of costly injury. My mom a while ago paid $50 for a one hour session with a friend of hers that’s a personal trainer and she showed my mom how to exercise using the exercise equipment that my mom already had. My mom wanted to know how to exercise without hurting herself by using her equipment incorrectly. So whether you just want to get into shape or you want to get stronger there are several ways to do so.
