Western civilization, week 7: Medea

Medea was a tragic play written by Euripides. The play starts when Jason and the Argonauts go to find the Golden Fleece and take it from a king so that Jason can become the king of Iolcus. The king who has the Golden Fleece says that Jason can have it if he does three nearly impossible tasks. Medea, the king’s daughter, says that she will help him complete these three tasks if he agrees to take her with them on their voyage back to Iolcus, Jason agrees. With Medea’s help Jason eventually gains the Golden Fleece and travels back home with Medea. Jason brings the Golden Fleece back to Iolcus and becomes king. After a while Jason stops loving Medea and marries someone else. This greatly enrages Medea, because without her help Jason would never of gotten the Golden Fleece and became king. Medea decides to kill Jason’s new wife and gets banished because of it.
