In Genesis 12 a man named Abram was told by God to leave his homeland, in Ur, and take his entire family and all his possessions and go to Canaan. God promised that he would give Abram and his descendants the land of Canaan. So Abram took his family, including him, his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his possessions to Canaan. After they lived there for a while there was a famine in the land so Abram and his family moved to Egypt, when they got there Abram lied to the Egyptians and said that Sarai was his sister, and not his wife. God revealed to Pharaoh that Sarai was his wife and he sent them away. Abram was very rich and had lots of livestock and there was not enough space for Abram and Lot to live together so Abram and Lot separated with Lot going to the Jordan Valley and Abram chose Canaan. God changed Abram’s name to Abraham and Sarai’s name to Sarah. When Abraham was 100 years old Sarah gave birth to Isaac. When Isaac was older God tested Abraham and told him to sacrifice Isaac. When Abraham was about to kill Isaac an angel appeared and said to not kill Isaac but to sacrifice a ram that had its horns caught in a bush behind them. Isaac gets married and has two kids, Jacob and Esau. When Isaac was dying Jacob pretended to be his older brother Esau to get his brothers blessing and because of this Esau chases Jacob away. Later after Jacob gets married to Leah and Rachel he comes back and Esau forgives him. God changes Jacob’s name to Israel. Israel has 12 sons and his favorite Joseph is not liked by his brothers so they sell Joseph to Egyptians. Joseph gets to work for the Pharoah and with God’s help he saves Egypt by interpreting Pharoah’s dream that a famine is coming. Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt for food and Joseph forgives them. Joseph’s family lives in Egypt until the time of Moses.
